Croydon pulled off a hard-fought 12–9 victory over Monash University in a tense B-grade preliminary final clash last weekend.
The game began with both sides trading runs early, keeping the scoreboard tight and the crowd on edge.
Monash pushed hard through the middle innings, but Croydon’s consistent pitching and timely hitting proved decisive down the stretch.
By the sixth inning, Croydon found their rhythm at the plate, stringing together a series of hits that broke open the contest. Their bullpen stepped up when it mattered, shutting down Monash’s offense just enough to protect the lead.
Croydon Coach Glenn Farrell admitted it was a nerve-wracking affair as the game swung back and forth.
“I was nervous during the game when Monash still had the chance of winning,” Farrell said.
“But the players stuck to their plan, and we managed to hold on.”
The win not only showcased Croydon’s resilience under pressure but also strengthened their confidence. With two finals victories already under their belt, the side is looking ahead with optimism.
“The team is really positive about their opportunity of winning the final after winning two finals,” Farrell said.
“We’ve worked hard all season, and this group has shown they’re capable of competing against anyone.”
The victory highlighted Croydon’s balance between pitching and hitting, a combination that could prove vital in their finals campaign.
While Monash fought valiantly and refused to let the game slip away easily, Croydon’s composure in the late stages ultimately carried them across the line.
With momentum now firmly in their favour, Croydon will be eager to carry this form into the next round as they chase championship glory.
They’ll have to work hard for it though, coming up against the top side Knox in this week’s grand final.
Knox finished with a 17-1 regular season record and beat Monash in the first round of finals, setting up a tantalising grand final clash.
