Dominant pitching the key to La Trobe’s B-grade win over Port Melbourne

Latrobe University put in a commanding performance, defeating Port Melbourne 9-3 in a high energy B-grade contest last Saturday afternoon.

From the opening pitch La Trobe showed intent, batting aggressively, playing sharp defence, and putting Port Melbourne on the back foot early.

Their ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities made the difference, as they pulled away across the middle innings and never looked back.

La Trobe’s hitting was clean and clinical, allowing them to build scoreboard pressure consistently and hold the lead comfortably through most of the game.

The standout performer on the day was La Trobe pitcher Allie Bebbere, who delivered a dominant display on the mound. With precise control and calm under pressure, she played a crucial role in silencing Port Melbourne’s offence.

“Playing against Port Melbourne, we knew it was a must-win game for us,” she said

“For me, it’s really just pitching with the La Trobe guys because I know they’ve got my back out there, so just putting it in the zone and the boys make it fun and easy to do that.”

Coach Daniel Bebbere praised both the performance and resilience of the team.

‘’We hit really well, we played defence really well as a unit, we all know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, but I think today our bats really spoke numbers” he said.

“There were moments where we let their mentality of baseball get on top of us, but we pushed through. That’s what I’m proud of.’’

Despite the scoreline, Port Melbourne showed a fight throughout the match. They applied pressure in patches and looked to shift momentum but were ultimately outplayed by a more composed and cohesive La Trobe side.

As the sun set, La Trobe walked off with heads high and the win under their belt, a performance that combined talent, team spirit and toughness.
