MATCH OF THE ROUND – Warriors earn the W over Melbourne in soggy conditions

The South-East Warriors defeated Melbourne on Saturday in the C-reserve competition, finishing 2-6 victors in wet, wintry conditions.

It was a cold, rain-soaked match at Surrey Park, with the conditions wreaking havoc on both teams, who were lucky to get a game in at all.

Warriors Head Coach Chris Argaet was pleased with his team’s performance despite the tough weather, praising their ability to gather important runs early.

“I’m really glad we got a game in with all the wet weather around,” said Argaet.

“I thought our guys in the field played really well, and we got up and put bat on ball, scoring runs early, which was great.”

Although the match was tied leading into the second inning, the Warriors were able to leverage their hitting strength to build a lead.

“I think in that second inning we got a couple of runners on with none out, and our guys just kept pushing them over. That’s when we really scored some runs and broke the game open,” said Argaet.

The Warriors’ coach praised the performance of their centre-fielder, Ollie Leeson, who was named Player of the Round.

“He fielded really well in tough conditions while also hitting and running for us all day,” said Argaet.

Leeson commented that the wet conditions made scoring difficult.

“It was really miserable out there—I tried not to slide as much as I could,” he said.

The weather was so disruptive for both teams, the game was eventually called off, having achieved a result.

Leeson felt his best play of the match was an important catch in centre-field at the bottom of the second innings.

He said the team was solid throughout the game, with a strong batting performance.

“We didn’t do anything crazy in the field. I thought we just did really well with the bats more than anything,” said Leeson.

“I got on base a couple of times—that was pretty stellar.”

This Saturday, Melbourne faces a tough test against ladder leaders Mitchell Majors, while the Warriors will have the chance to continue their winning streak against Diamond Creek.
