Last Sunday saw a competitive final game of the season between North Balwyn and Melbourne University White in the Div 1 women’s competition, with both teams sitting top 2 on the ladder and eyeing finals.
North Balwyn had the game under control 7-1 in the opening innings, with some good hitting and pitching. but some wobbles in the middle innings saw Melbourne Uni make a comeback, as the final hour decided the fate of the game.
North Balwyn were able to wrestle back momentum, winding up 12-9 victors.
Post game, North Balwyn coach Mick Morrack described his team’s approach.
“We didn’t have any specific tactics, but we did have 7 runs in the first innings, and the game came to a very narrow margin. These ladies have shown time and time again that they have got the ability and the focus to come back from a losing or a significant margin and win the game for the team,” he said.
Morrack also reflected on the regular season before finals, stating the belief he has in his team and the talent of all the players.
“They can comeback from both highs and lows. Players can make errors, it can be hard sometimes, but these ladies have shown every now and then that it does not bother them and continue to play good baseball.”
As for Melbourne University, their game showed good skill but wasn’t quite enough to topple the top team.
The two teams will face off again in the semi-finals this week, while the other semi will see St Kilda take on Melbourne Uni’s Blue side.
Match of the Round is chosen in-advance each week and designed to provide coverage of the entire league across the season. It is produced with support from the MWBL’s communications and content partner, The Content Engine.
