On a cold Saturday afternoon, the North Coburg Rebels played host to the St Kilda Saints in the B-grade competition. In a close match, the Rebels emerged victorious in a 3-1 win.
The Rebels now move up into 3rd on the ladder, with the Saints remaining in 7th place.
Rebels coach Andy Karp was pleased by the significant improvements his side had made since last year.
“We haven’t beaten these guys in a couple years, so it’s been a full-circle moment to see everyone perform well and beat them,” said Karp.
“It’s great to see that our young guys have gotten stronger.”
Karp said the key moment was a triple by Mace Poole in the bottom of the first inning.
“That was awesome,” said Karp. “He got a couple of big hits throughout the game that were very important.”
The manager also praised pitcher Charlie Sutherland’s work on the mound, who he selected as the player of the match for helping restrict the Saints to 1 run.
Sutherland said he was just happy the team got over the line.
“Pleased just to get the win in the end,” said Sutherland.
However, he felt that if the Rebels want to win more games they must improve their batting.
“I think we hit well at the moment, but we need to be even better, because we’re going up against some better teams coming up.”
However for Sutherland, just playing together as a team is enough of a win.
“Love just everyone here as a team and that’s what I love to see, being here with all the boys,” said Sutherland.
This Saturday, the North Coburg Rebels are back at home to face Greensborough, while St Kilda travel to face La Trobe University.
