GMBC stormed home to a walk off 8-7 premiership win against North Balwyn in the Grand Final rematch for the Under 17s Div 1 last Saturday.
It was a steady start for both sides, scoring one run each in the opening inning.
North Balwyn then decided to step on the gas, scoring five runs to GMBC’s two, giving the Stingers a three run lead in the second.
The third, fourth, and fifth innings turned into a defensive showcase, with both sides shutting down every scoring chance to keep the game on a knife’s edge.
But GMBC erupted in the final inning with five clutch runs to overpower North Balwyn’s single run, sealing the premiership in a dramatic walk-off finish.
GMBC’s coach, Mat Kent, gave us some insight to what his team were thinking heading into this game after the draw the week before.
“We felt like we didn’t play our best baseball last week and we drew,” he said.
“So if we brought our best baseball today, we would win.”
Eric Webster was chosen as player of the match for only conceding one run after pitching four innings and hitting the game winning run too.
“All of us showed that we were here for it and showed a bit of fight,” Webster said.
“We always got around everyone no matter what happened and that helped a lot.”
Congratulations to Coach Kent and his team for a fantastic season and congratulations to GMBC for the premiership.
Commiserations to North Balwyn but congratulations for their efforts this season and a competitive finals series as well.
