A late surge from Waverley saw them win 8-0 over Research Lower Plenty in the Under 15s Division 1 last Saturday morning.
It was a very defensive start from both teams as no runs were scored in the first two innings and only a few runners making it onto base.
It wasn’t until the third when Waverley managed to plate two runs, while Research remained scoreless.
The fourth saw another nil-all inning, keeping the score to 2-0.
But the last two innings saw Waverley break away, scoring five runs in the fifth and another one in the sixth bringing the final total to 8-0.
Team volunteer, Adrian Bellina, spoke on behalf of Waverly and commended the teams’ pitching efforts.
“I think it was an awesome display on the mound from both pitchers,” he said.
“The great defensive work won us the day in my opinion.”
First pitcher, Hugh Hockley, was chosen as player of the match for his work on the mound, but was quick to commend his teammates for backing him up so well.
“The boys really helped me today in the field,” he said.
“It was nice having them behind me knowing they’d get everything.”
Waverley will finish third on the ladder, solidifying a finals berth.
Hockley told us how he feels heading into finals with his team.
“I’m a bit nervous,” he said.
“But after today I have confidence in my team so hopefully we do well.”
The next round is the first week of finals in the division, where we will see Waverley take on Heathmont, while Research Lower Plenty take on GMBC for a place in the grand final.
Match of the Round is chosen in-advance each week and designed to provide coverage of the entire league across the season. It is produced with support from the MWBL’s communications and content partner, The Content Engine.
