Heathmont put up a powerful display over Monash Uni, winning 22-3 last Sunday in the Women’s Division 2.
The first ever Heathmont women’s team flexed their muscles, getting seven runs to Monash’s one in the first innings.
They continued to dominate in the second, again scoring seven while keeping Monash scoreless, extending their lead to 14-1.
Both teams were tight through the middle innings but the final dig proved the power of Heathmont, scoring another seven runs to Monash’s one, bringing the final score to 22-3.
Heathmont’s coach, Cale Hunkin, commended the team for their energy on and off the field.
“Our team always bring the energy,” he said.
“We’ve made a point to make every game as energetic as possible and they really brought it today.”
The manager chose Jess Hunkin as his player of the round for her great efforts all around the field.
“She threw an absolute game for us,” he said.
“On the mound she threw strike after strike, then came out and dominated with the bat as well.”
With her standout performance on both sides of the ball, Jess commended her recent training efforts and her teammates’ support for the result.
“Pitching felt really good today with the girls bringing the energy,” she said.
“I’ve also been working on my hitting, so it was nice to see it pay off today.”
This is Heathmont’s first year fielding a women’s side in the MWBL and they’ve wasted no time in dominating the competition, only losing one game so far this season.
Coach Hunkin says his players have exceeded expectations and how it has had an impact off the field too.
“This is our first ever year and our players are doing great,” he said.
“I had one player come to me and say it was like magic seeing women of different ages and backgrounds come together.”
Next week, Heathmont head south to play the Warriors while Monash Uni head home to play La Trobe.
Match of the Round is chosen in-advance each week and designed to provide coverage of the entire league across the season. It is produced with support from the MWBL’s communications and content partner, The Content Engine.
