Knox defeated Essendon 9-3 in a chilly contest

Knox Falcons defeated the Essendon Bombers 9-3 in the Under 17s Division 2 last Saturday morning.

Although conditions were cold, the Falcons had a hot start scoring two runs to none in the first inning. Then the pitching efforts from both sides kept the second inning scoreless.

The third inning saw the Bombers scoreless yet again, with Knox scoring five runs and breaking the game open, 7-0.

The fourth inning saw both teams score a run each, putting Essendon on the scoreboard, 8-1.

In the final inning, Essendon pushed through scoring two runs to one bringing the Falcons’ lead down to six, leaving the final score at 9-3.

The Knox Falcons team manager, Daniel Smith, was very proud of his team’s efforts after coming back from a two-week break for school holidays.

“We came back strong despite the break”, he said.

“It was good to see the desire and the intensity was still there.”

Smith chose Nate Bugeja as player of the match for his great pitching effort.

“Nate was unreal on the mound,” Smith said.

“He threw with intensity, authority and command which was really great to see.”

Bugeja said it was one of his best performances yet.

“That the best I’ve pitched in a while,” he said.

“I was locating my pitches better and it just felt really good.”

Next week Essendon head home to play CGS Gold while Knox stay put and play Research – Waverley.

Match of the Round is chosen in-advance each week and designed to provide coverage of the entire league across the season. It is produced with support from the MWBL’s communications and content partner, The Content Engine.
