GMBC defeated Heathmont in the A-Reserve Grand Final last Saturday, becoming back-to-back premiers in the division.
It was a blazing start for both sides, scoring three runs each in the opening inning.
But Heathmont’s attack in the second got them a one run lead to end the inning ahead 4-3.
Then a display of defence in the third saw a runless inning, making it anyone’s game.
But it was GMBC that took charge, scoring four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to Heathmont’s none, giving Monty a decisive 9-4 lead.
Another solid defensive inning saw both sides go scoreless once again, with the game slowly sliding into Monty’s hands.
They were able to hold strong in the final dig, taking the W 9-4.
GMBC’s coach Travis Cutt told us his thoughts on is team’s efforts.
“We stayed in it the whole game,” he said.
“We knew things weren’t always going to go our way, and they really kept their heads in it.”
Cutt chose Christian Caminiti as player of the match for both his pitching and his work in the batter’s box.
“Christian wore the badge really well,” he said.
“He kept on doing his job, which was getting his ground balls, then got a few RBIs as well when batting so he was outstanding.”
Caminiti gave an insight into what was going through his head on the mound.
“Just get strike one and build off that” he said.
“Keeping the momentum rolling in my favour really helped with my game.”
But he wasn’t shy in talking up his teammates and how they helped him during the game too.
“The boys are the best,” he said.
“They picked me up when I was down and supported me in every way… I love them dearly.”
Congratulations to Cutt and his team on their efforts this season and going back-to-back with their premierships.
Congratulations and commiserations to Heathmont, who finished top of the regular season table and put up a valiant fight in the championship game.
