GMBC have taken home the A-grade premiership, defeating the North Balwyn Stingers 1-0 in a nail-biter last Saturday afternoon.
In what was an onslaught of strikes throughout the game, pitchers Ryder Wilson (GMBC) and Jon & Mitchell Kennedy (North Balwyn) put on a clinic.
The defence from both sides was phenomenal with no runs scored for the first six innings.
But GMBC fought hard in the batter’s box to plate what would eventually be the deciding run, in the seventh inning.
The crowd were on the edge of their seats for the final two innings, as GMBC battled to shut out North Balwyn, eventually running out 1-0 winners.
GMBC’s team manager, Wade McConnon, gave us insight to what he expected from the game.
“The whole day was going to be about just chipping away,” he said.
“We only got one run in the end but it was enough to get the win.”
GMBC’s lone pitcher, Ryder Wilson, was chosen as player of the match for keeping the Stingers scoreless.
“Defensively, Ryder did so well,” McConnon said.
“He did so well he was able to go for all nine innings.”
Wilson gave us a bit of insight into what was going through his head while pitching.
“I just took one ball at a time and let the batters get themselves out,” he said.
But Wilson gave a lot of the credit to his team.
“They had my back,” he said.
“The boys did a lot of the work behind me and it really helped in the end.”
Congratulations to Wade McConnon and his team for the premiership and to GMBC for their fantastic season.
Congratulations and commiserations also to North Balwyn on a great fight in the grand final and an excellent season.
