GMBC’s A-Grade side defeated reigning premiers North Balwyn in a 10-9 walk-off last Saturday.
North Balwyn took the lead early, with their noses in front 5-4 after two innings, while both teams put up zeroes in the third and fourth.
In the fifth inning GMBC got their noses in front to lead 7-6, before winning in a walk-off to make the final score 10-9 in the sixth.
GMBC’s head coach, Wade McConnon, said he was proud of his team’s effort to get the lead back.
“It seemed like we were chasing all day,” he said.
“I’m really happy how our guys responded and were able to create opportunities off the back of every time they jumped out.”
He also talked about the message to his team at the end of the day.
“We take confidence out of the little things in that game, like being able to come back when the time is right,” he said.
“They can now understand that we are never out of it and we are always a chance.”
McConnon nominated former major-leaguer Aaron Whitefield, who scored the winning run, as player of the match.
“It was an awesome game with two great teams,” Whitefield said.
“To have it that close so early in the season, it’s great for not just us but [North Balwyn] as well.”
Next week North Balwyn will take on Greensborough at home while GMBC head down the road to take on Watsonia.
Match of the Round is chosen in-advance each week and designed to provide coverage of the entire league across the season. It is produced with support from the MWBL’s communications and content partner, The Content Engine.
